2Best for Image-Heavy Designs: A4 | 200gsm Cover with Matte Lamination + 157gsm Inner Pages

Richer images and a more substantial feel when turning the pages; ideal for portfolios, product catalogues and display catalogues.

3Best Value for Text-Heavy Content: 160gsm Book Paper Cover (Unlaminated) + 128gsm Inner Pages

Clean, easy to read and more economical; ideal for reports, handouts, guide booklets and simple catalogues.

Key Features (Why Saddle Stitching Is So Popular)
✅ Opens Flat for Easy Reading

The inner pages open flat, making spreads clearer and pages comfortable to turn.

✅ Ideal for Small Quantities

Order from just 1 copy—convenient for testing demand, producing a sample or distributing a small batch.

✅ Most Economical

Among comparable binding methods, saddle stitching is usually the most economical, cost-effective option for booklets.

Tip: if you need a low page count, a booklet that opens flat and copies for street or event distribution, saddle stitching is generally the first choice.

Choosing Paper & Covers (The Right Option for Each Use)
Option Feel / Visual Characteristics Best For...
Cover: 160gsm Book Paper
Unlaminated / Clean and Natural
A strong reading feel with a natural book-like finish; clear text and a more economical cost. Handouts, reports, guide booklets and simple catalogues (mainly text).
Cover: 200gsm Gloss Art Paper (Matte Lamination)
Sturdier / Longer-Lasting Appearance
A more rigid cover; matte lamination reduces glare and gives a more premium feel, with more consistent image reproduction. Brand catalogues, event programmes and portfolio booklets (when a premium feel matters).
Inner Pages: 128gsm Gloss Art Paper
Light and Easy to Turn / Good Value
Suitable for plenty of text with a few images; easy to turn through without making the booklet too thick. Course handbooks, internal documents and booklets (with more information).
Inner Pages: 157gsm Gloss Art Paper
More Substantial / Better-Looking Images
Richer images and more substantial pages, with the feel of a formal catalogue. Product catalogues, photography/portfolio work and display booklets (image-heavy designs).

For an extra premium touch, the cover can also have spot UV / embossing and other finishes as required (for special finishes, send us your artwork on WhatsApp for the most accurate advice).

Page-Count Rules (The Most Common Pitfall)
✅ Page Count Must Be a Multiple of 4
  • Saddle stitching uses folded sheets: each sheet becomes 4 pages after folding
  • Therefore, the total page count must be a multiple of 4 for correct imposition and binding
  • Common page counts: 12 / 16 / 20 / 24 / 28 / 32, etc.
✅ What Does a 4-Page Cover Mean?
  • 4-page cover = front cover + inside front cover + inside back cover + back cover
  • Choose a 4pp cover + 8pp inner pages = 12 pages in total
  • Choose a 4pp cover + 16pp inner pages = 20 pages in total
  • Choose a 4pp cover + 24pp inner pages = 28 pages in total

Sizes & Bleed (Reliable Artwork Settings)

Recommended A5 (Portrait) Settings

Finished trim size: 148 × 210mm Bleed size: 154 × 216mm (3mm on each edge) Safe area: at least 3–5mm on each edge Keep content at least 6mm away from the centre fold
For spread designs (one image across facing pages), avoid placing faces or logos directly over the centre fold.

Recommended A4 (Portrait) Settings

Finished trim size: 210 × 297mm Bleed size: 216 × 303mm (3mm on each edge) Safe area: at least 3–5mm on each edge Keep content at least 6mm away from the centre fold
For full-bleed images, include the full 3mm bleed to prevent white edges after trimming.
Artwork Guidelines (Correct Files Produce the Best Results)
✅ File Formats
  • Recommended: PDF (Print) / AI
  • Accepted: PSD (please ensure images are embedded)
  • For special finishes (UV/embossing, etc.): use labelled layers in an AI file
✅ Colour / Images
  • Colour mode: CMYK
  • Images: 300dpi is the recommended standard
  • Black text: use 100K wherever possible (to prevent misregistration in small four-colour black text)
✅ Layout Essentials
  • Total page count = a multiple of 4 (most important)
  • Outline all text or include the fonts
  • Allow space at the centre fold to prevent content disappearing into it
Pre-press Notes (5 Quick Points)
1
Page count must be a multiple of 4: otherwise, correct imposition is impossible and blank pages or misplaced content may result.
2
Keep key content away from the centre fold: keep logos, faces and small text away from the fold line wherever possible.
3
Full-bleed artwork must include bleed: allow at least 3mm on every edge for clean trimming.
4
Use 100K for small text: avoid four-colour black for small text so it prints more solidly and clearly.
5
Production begins after artwork approval: we print from the file you approve; if you need us to check the layout (page count/bleed/centre fold), send the PDF via WhatsApp first.
Want Us to Check the Page Count and Bleed?
Send the PDF directly via WhatsApp and we will quick-check it first, helping prevent content being lost in the fold or white edges appearing after trimming.
FAQ
Q: Why Must a Saddle-Stitched Booklet Have a Page Count That Is a Multiple of 4?
Saddle stitching uses folded sheets. Each sheet becomes 4 pages after folding, so the total page count must be a multiple of 4 for correct imposition and binding.
Q: Which Is Better for the Cover: 160gsm Book Paper or 200gsm Gloss Art Paper with Matte Lamination?
Book paper feels natural and is a good-value choice for reading; 200gsm gloss art paper with matte lamination is sturdier, more scuff-resistant and gives a more formal catalogue finish. For image-heavy or brand-focused designs, matte lamination is usually the safer choice.
Q: Is There Much Difference Between 128gsm and 157gsm Inner Pages?
128gsm is light, good value and easy to turn through even with plenty of text; 157gsm is more substantial, produces richer images and feels more like a formal catalogue. If photographs or product images dominate, 157gsm gives a more premium feel.
Q: Can I Add Special Finishes (Spot UV/Embossing)?
Yes, depending on your design and placement (such as the position of a logo on the cover). Send us the artwork via WhatsApp and we will recommend the most suitable option based on the effect and cost.
Q: Do You Accept Small Quantities (1–10 Copies)?
Yes. This product is designed for small quantities from just 1 copy. Tell us the size, page count, paper and delivery date, and we can promptly confirm the options and quote.
