Section-Sewn Hardcover Book / Photo Album | From 1 Copy | More Durable • Easier to Browse • More Presentable

Looking for a photo album, portfolio or brand book that will withstand years of browsing without pages falling out? Section-sewn hardcover binding is the most reliable premium binding option: The inner pages are sewn together in sections, then protected by a hard cover, making pages smoother to turn and more durable while giving the book real presence on display.

Minimum order: from 1 copy Size: A5 / A4 Inner pages: 200gsm gloss art paper Cover: 157gsm gloss art paper mounted on board Cover finish: matte lamination / gloss lamination Binding: section-sewn hardcover (more durable)
Quick Selection (decide in 30 seconds)

1Photo album / commemorative book: A5 + 40–56pp (most practical)

Just the right amount of content, easy to hold and browse; it accommodates plenty of photos without becoming too thick, and pages turn comfortably.

2Portfolio / brand book: A4 + 56–80pp (greatest impact)

The larger format presents work and case studies more persuasively, making it ideal for client meetings, tenders and brand presentations.

3Most reliable cover finish: matte lamination (sophisticated and fingerprint resistant)

Choose matte lamination for a premium, durable finish; gloss lamination is brighter and more eye-catching, ideal for highly colourful designs.

Page-count Rules (common pitfalls with section-sewn hardcover books)
1
The page count must be a multiple of 4: for example, 24/40/56/80pp. If it is not a multiple of 4, the layout will need adjusting.
2
Section-sewn books are sewn in "signatures": generally, each 16pp section is sewn as one signature, so the page count must follow the binding structure.
3
Visible thread at the centre is normal: this is a feature of section-sewn binding and provides greater durability.
4
Keep important subjects in double-page photos away from the centre seam: double-page spreads are possible, but keep the main subject or logo away from the centre.
5
For the best result, finalise the page count + size before preparing the cover spread artwork: the cover must allow for the spine width. Send us the page count and size, and we can advise on the most reliable cover artwork setup.
Not sure how to plan the page count?
WhatsApp us with the approximate amount of content (number of pages / photos), and we will help you choose the most suitable 24/40/56/80pp combination.
Design / Artwork Submission Advice (good artwork makes a better finished product)
✅ Recommended Files
  • Preferred: PDF (with bleed) / AI
  • Acceptable: PSD (images must be embedded)
  • Inner pages and cover: we recommend two separate files
✅ Colour / Clarity
  • Colour mode: CMYK
  • Photo resolution: 300dpi (must be clear at 100% view)
  • Text: we recommend outlining fonts to prevent font issues
✅ Safe Area / Double-page Spreads
  • Keep important content away from the trim edge: we recommend ≥10mm
  • Double-page spreads: keep faces / logos away from the centre seam
  • The cover requires a spine: finalise the page count first and we can provide alignment guidance
You can send us the inner-page PDF first and we will check for risks relating to the page count, double-page spreads and centre seam.
A quick check before submission can usually prevent 80% of the problems that would otherwise need fixing later.
FAQ
Q: Why must the page count be a multiple of 4?
Section-sewn hardcover books are made by folding pages into signatures and sewing them together, so the page count must follow the required multiples. The most common page counts are 24/40/56/80pp. If you are unsure, tell us how much content you have and we will help you choose the most suitable page count.
Q: What is the main difference between section-sewn and perfect binding?
Section-sewn binding sews the pages before assembly, making the book more durable and smoother to browse. Perfect binding relies on adhesive and is generally more economical, but is slightly less durable with long-term use. Section-sewn binding is better value if the book will be kept for years or browsed frequently.
Q: Will thread be visible at the centre? Is that a defect?
A little visible thread is normal and is a structural feature of section-sewn binding; it makes the book stronger and more durable. When designing double-page spreads, keep the main subject or logo away from the centre seam for the best result.
Q: Should I choose matte or gloss lamination for the cover?
For a premium, sophisticated and fingerprint-resistant finish, choose matte lamination; for a brighter, more eye-catching finish with more vibrant colours, choose gloss lamination. Matte lamination is the more presentable choice for most photo albums and portfolios.
Q: Can I add gold foil stamping / UV / embossing and other finishes?
Yes, these are available by custom quote. We strongly recommend applying them only to key areas (such as the logo / book title) for a cleaner, more luxurious finished product, and easier control over the result and cost.
