What Is Translucent Vellum Paper, and Why Is It See-Through?

Translucent paper goes by several names — vellum, tracing paper, or greaseproof "butter" paper — but they all point to the same thing: a semi-transparent sheet that instantly makes a printed piece feel more considered and premium. It's made by bathing uncut, unbound sheets in concentrated sulphuric acid; after a few seconds the paper is lifted out, rinsed in clean water, and finished with a glycerine treatment. Once dry, the treated sheet turns firm, dense, and lightly see-through. Because sulphuric acid does the work, the trade also calls it sulphuric-acid paper (硫酸紙).

Beyond its translucency, the paper is water-, moisture- and grease-resistant, as well as hygienic enough for food use — which is why it so often ends up in food packaging. Its most familiar job is wrapping butter, and that's exactly where the name "butter paper" (牛油紙) comes from. The third name, "tracing paper" (描圖紙), comes from artists laying the semi-transparent sheet over a drawing to trace it.

What to Watch Out for When Printing on Vellum

Because translucent paper is somewhat water-resistant, ink can't fully key into the surface the way it does on ordinary stock. Printing the same single colour, a standard woodfree (offset) paper soaks up roughly 97% of the ink, while translucent paper takes up only about 60%. That leads to a few rules of thumb:

  • Avoid large solid areas of colour.
  • Avoid very heavy ink loads — a total CMYK value above 200.
  • Expect printed colours to come out lighter. If colour accuracy matters, order a proof to confirm the result before the full run.
  • Simple line work and single-colour printing give the best results.
