Metal reads as luxury. Plenty of clients in luxury goods and high-end professional services are drawn to a metallic look, and for good reason: almost anything with a metallic quality feels more premium, and most of us respond positively to metal, whether it is a plain metallic sheen or a precious-metal finish. Put that quality onto paper and a card stock can carry a real sense of prestige and exclusivity.
Below are three metallic-look card stocks. Paired with the right design, each one can deliver a genuinely head-turning effect.
Brushed Gold Card
Brushed gold card carries a fine horizontal metallic grain across its surface. Visually it is almost indistinguishable from a sheet of metal, and there is a subtle brushed texture under the fingertips as well. For anyone chasing a premium feel, brushed gold card can lift a printed piece by at least a level. It suits simple designs: even plain black text printed on it already looks high-end.
The character of brushed gold card is already strong, so if you want to make the card more distinctive through finishing, reach for a colourless emboss or a foil-stamped effect to amplify its appeal. We would not recommend gold foil, though, because it clashes with the card's own colour.

Holographic Silver Card
The signature trait of holographic silver card is the way it throws off a rainbow shimmer under light. The whole card looks dreamlike, with a touch of the futuristic about it. The renowned Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama is especially fond of that iridescent sparkle, and holographic elements turn up throughout his work, which is clear proof of how strongly the effect pulls us in.
Holographic silver card is already an eye-catcher, so we would steer you away from large blocks of colour or big images in the design: broad areas of colour dampen the holographic reflection. If you are using holographic card, it is for that iridescent glow, and a simple design is what keeps the stock's character intact.

Mirror Card
Mirror card is exactly what it sounds like: card stock you can see your reflection in. Its mirror surface bounces the viewer back into the card, which makes it enormously playful. A little thought in the design is all it takes to turn the card into something genuinely fun. Like the others, it is not well suited to large areas of printed colour, because the ink covers up the mirror property and dials down the playfulness.
Mirror card can create wonderful interactivity, because it reflects the real environment back into the card and merges it with the design. Pulling off a strongly interactive design, though, leans heavily on the designer's instincts.

Shiny Things Pull Us In
Anything that glints and glows catches the eye easily. We are all drawn to sparkling products, which is why so much cosmetics packaging is shiny. Printed pieces with that shimmer are quick to make an impression. Picture a single holographic silver card sitting among a stack of ordinary ones: it is the one we would reach for first.
Printed promotional material is so often about grabbing attention, and these three card stocks can absolutely help you become the standout in the pile.
