Of all the ways to finish a card, laser cutting is the most striking. A focused beam slices clean through the paper at high speed to carve an extreme, precise effect — which is why the process is called laser engraving. Its real strength is handling fine, intricate cuts that die-cutting simply can't match. If you want a card that stands apart, a laser-cut one is your best bet.
How laser engraving works
Laser engraving uses a focused, high-energy laser beam to cut or engrave a material. Because the beam carries very high energy and density and can be focused down to an extremely fine point, it excels at cutting delicate, detailed patterns. Put another way, laser engraving uses concentrated heat to melt material away, leaving the engraved effect behind.
Laser engraving limits — artwork guidelines
Laser engraving delivers outstanding results and can cut remarkably fine patterns, but it comes with real limits. Keep the following in mind as you design, or the cut may be impossible to produce, or come out looking less than ideal.
- Keep any laser-cut element at least 8mm from the edge of the card.
- Leave no less than 1mm between the cut and any other printed element or finish.
- The cut pattern must be structurally sound, or the design will fall apart.
- If you're cutting Chinese or English lettering, make sure the strokes stay connected.

Pairing laser engraving with other finishes
1. Duplex (mounted) cards
Mounting two sheets back to back makes the laser-cut area really stand out, giving the finished card more depth than embossing. You can print or foil-stamp the layer sitting behind the cut-out, which makes the effect sharper and more distinctive.
2. Coloured stock
Coloured card stock doesn't take full-colour printing well — you'd have to lay down white ink first and then the colours on top, which adds steps. Instead, we let the coloured stock's own character do the work and add the laser cut on top. That means less printing overall and gives the card more personality.

A finish like no other, beyond the expected
Laser-cut cards are creative by nature. Pair the cut with distinctive lettering or a logo and you get an effect no one else has. On a business card especially, it puts a company's creativity on full display. A card made with real thought doesn't just deliver visual impact — it leaves an outsized, lasting impression of the company behind it.
