PVC board and Foamboard are two of the most common materials for exhibition and display work, and the most obvious difference is that PVC is stiffer than Foamboard. But which printed display board is actually better to work with?

In this guide, Printing Banana's print experts break both materials down from every angle — characteristics, price, uses, how they're mounted, and real applications — so you can put each board to its best use.

PVC and Foamboard: the materials at a glance

Foamboard

Foamboard is made by expanding polystyrene (PS) beads into foam — which is why it's also called foam board or "pearl board." The foam is pressed into sheets, then faced on both sides with a thin PVC film, and that's the Foamboard you usually see.

Foamboard is light and cheap. But its core is soft, so it deforms easily under pressure — it's not suited to intricate models, and it needs careful handling in use.

PVC board is also made from polystyrene, but here the foaming happens inside the core, which gives it a density 3–4 times higher than Foamboard. That extra density makes the board harder, so even a firm squeeze won't easily deform it.

When should you use PVC board? When should you use Foamboard?

Foamboard — short-term or indoor use

Foamboard has a low density, so there's a lot of air trapped inside the board. Under prolonged sunlight or heat, that air expands. And because the PS film on the surface is so thin, it can't hold the air in over time — so the air collects between the Foamboard and its printed adhesive layer and forms bubbles.

Outdoors, Foamboard's lifespan is short because the trapped air expands even faster, speeding up the bubbling. Since Foamboard bubbles and warps easily, it's really only suitable for short-term or indoor use.

PVC board — long-term, indoor or outdoor use

PVC board's high density stops air from escaping, and it's hard enough to outlast Foamboard. It holds up for long-term use, indoors or out. If a client only needs the display up for a short run — say a day or two — and doesn't need a premium finish, then Foamboard is the best pick. But when the budget is there, PVC is absolutely the first choice.

*If the budget is tight, paper-faced Foamboard can stand in for PVC board. Paper-faced Foamboard stops the air from escaping, greatly reducing bubbling, so it holds up for long-term use — but it's as soft as regular Foamboard and still deforms easily under pressure.

Foamboard and PVC in action

  • Backdrops

    Uses: 5mm Foamboard

Most event backdrops are used indoors for a short time, and since Foamboard is light and easy to install, it's the material we recommend.

Short outdoor events can use a Foamboard backdrop too, but for longer outdoor runs a matte canvas banner works better.

  • Photo Props (mockup cheques, Facebook "like" props)

    Uses: 5mm Foamboard

Photo props are single-use pieces, mainly for photo ops during an event — like the oversized mockup cheques you often see at charity galas, which have served their purpose once the dinner wraps up.

You can also have props die-cut into any shape you like. Die-cut Foamboard costs HKD 20 / sq ft.

  • IG / FB Photo Frames

Uses: 5mm Foamboard / PVC board

The IG/FB photo frame has been a hugely popular Foamboard photo prop in recent years — two or three people hold up the frame and look like they're inside a social post. We suggest ordering two stands to hold the frame in place, so guests don't have to hold it and can strike more poses.

If you're making it for a company, go with PVC board so it can be reused.

  • Life-size Cutout Standees

    Uses: 5mm PVC board

We recommend making cutout standees from PVC board, because Foamboard deforms far too easily — one press of a hand and it's ruined. For anything that needs to last, PVC board is completely reliable. You can use Foamboard, of course, but expect a high chance of damage.

  • Exhibition Booths

    Uses: 5mm Foamboard

The panels used for booths at conventions and exhibitions are Foamboard, usually in an H-shape (Foamboard on three sides) or an L-shape (Foamboard on two sides). A 3×3 H-shape and L-shape cost HKD 2,888 and HKD 2,388 respectively. Foamboard is chosen because the run is short and the material is cheap.

  • Promo Counters

    Uses: 5mm paper-faced Foamboard / PVC

This promo-event staple is built from an aluminium frame plus printed boards. Whether you go with paper-faced Foamboard or PVC comes down to whether the design is single-use or long-term. The artwork on a promo counter can be swapped out yourself, though it takes some effort — and we'll be publishing a how-to on that. Promo counters start from HKD 320.

  • A-Frames / H-Frames

    Uses: 5mm paper-faced Foamboard / PVC

A-frames and H-frames are both sign stands, typically used to display promotions or the latest news. The printed boards on both are replaceable — order them to match your frame — and the usual thickness is 3–5mm. For long-term use you'll want PVC; to save on budget, paper-faced Foamboard does the job.

  • Countertop Display Stands

    Uses: 5mm paper-faced Foamboard / PVC board

A countertop stand is made by adding a paper backing to the blank side of the Foamboard or PVC board so the panel can stand on a table. Common sizes are A4 and A5, and you can also customise other sizes and shapes.
