There's a quiet warmth to receiving a Christmas card. Writing one is a genuinely thoughtful gesture — both the person who sends it and the person who opens it feel the lift. In Hong Kong, Christmas has always been a season the whole city celebrates, from the religious services to the strings of festive lights lining both sides of Victoria Harbour.

On an occasion that means this much, a heartfelt Christmas card for your corporate clients and friends is an easy way to pass a little warmth along. Below are a few Christmas card designs worth considering, together with the print finishes each one uses — or could use — to stand out.

The cute Santa Christmas card

This set leads with a cartoon Santa and his reindeer. We'd suggest printing it in full colour on Super-Sense stock. Among the specialty papers, Super-Sense handles large areas of solid colour better than most while keeping a subtle paper texture — so you get bright, punchy colour on the front and a surface you can still write on at the back.

Because the front is already packed with artwork and looks rich as it is, I wouldn't add any further finishing there. If you do want a craft touch, add gold foil to the logo on the back instead. You could also foil-stamp your company logo, which gives the card a nice branded feel.

The black card with gold foil

Black card and gold foil is a faultless pairing, and it works just as well on a Christmas card — the foil makes black stock even more striking. If you're going to foil, keep the lines in your design on the thicker side: at least 1.5 mm. That gives you a cleaner result and avoids breaks in the foil.

Black card isn't well suited to full-colour printing, so we'd build the design around the foil instead. And when you want to write on black card, reach for a gold or silver marker pen — most other colours simply get swallowed by the black.

The white cotton Christmas card

Snow is one of the defining images of Christmas. We don't get it in Hong Kong, of course, but you can conjure that soft, snowy feeling with cotton card. Cotton stock comes in several textures; for the softest, most cushioned feel, reach for WILD cotton card. WILD is a great choice for pressing effects, too — it's softer than the others, so it takes a deeper impression.

To give the card even more character, add gold foil in a few well-chosen spots — it lifts the whole piece.

A card carries a blessing — Merry Christmas, everyone

For most of us, Christmas is really about sharing the joy of the season — and joy often isn't complicated. A greeting, a smile, a single card can be enough. We hope a beautifully made Christmas card helps you pass a little more of that joy along to your clients and friends.
